Magician Called to Magic

There are those who believe and attempt to preach that magic lives only in certain bloodlines, and that you must be born of such a line to be a magician. I reject this idea as categorically false and consider it little more than self-aggrandizing, self-serving rhetoric peddled by those with an elitist ideology and perhaps also promoted by members of the charlatan class.

I carry on about that in this post.

The article before you now is about being called to magic.

Magicians called to magic are those who are often inexplicably drawn to the Art for reasons they cannot convey. Many recall encounters early in or just prior to their magical career with a female presence or spirit, either in a dream or while wide awake.

She has many names, including Antaia the one who encounters. This is the initiator goddess, an aspect or form of Hecate, Cerridwen, Selene, and others.

Initiations Take Many Forms

I know a man who began to have paranormal experiences in his home. He couldn’t escape the idea that he was supposed to be doing something or getting some message out of the whole affair. One night a female voice whispered into his ear “I’ve found you.”

Sadly, the man receiving this calling, despite the fact that an experienced magician explained the idea of the initiator goddess, did nothing with it. He was gifted study materials and even offered free instruction, but he chose to keep sitting on his ass day-dreaming and awaiting some other mystical opportunity. A victim of too much fantasy fiction, he believes his calling should come in the form of some epic quest or his being dubbed some kind of special chosen something.

Another man felt the call of crystals and gems and Futhark runes at an early age. He dabbled but never got overly serious. At a certain point in his life the moon became a source of peculiar inspiration and intrigue; he couldn’t stop looking at it or thinking about “her” as he put it.

One day a strange shape, just a collection of lines at angles connected to one-another, came to him. The shape would not go away and insisted upon his attention for days.

Finally it occurred to him to place the lines over the magic square of the moon, although he didn’t know why, for he had never been taught about using these squares to make sigils at that time. He superimposed the shape over the square where he intuitively felt he should, then wrote down the numbers each line passed through.

Using numerology from a book he owned but had never read, he converted the numbers to letters. He had never practiced numerology prior to this. He ended up with a word he’d never seen or heard before: Cerridwen, who is of course another initiator Goddess often associated with the underworld, the moon, and a magical cauldron of knowledge, inspiration, rebirth, and so forth.

This man heeded the call and still practices magic at the time of this writing.

The takeaway here might be that…

Life is not a movie, even with magic. Rock and roll music doesn’t play as you navigate a struggle that might crush you – unless of course you play some rock and roll. There is also no guarantee to get or do what is “meant to be”.

You can totally screw it up by not acting or even not noticing in the first place. That is the harsh reality.

The good news is I think most of us have more than one opportunity to meet a calling of some sort. I concede maybe it is possible a human being is put on or comes to this earth for but one, singular reason and if they miss it they’re wasted.

I say maybe only to maintain intellectual honesty and integrity, because I of course do not know. Not knowing, I am unable to say things are definitely one way or another.

I do, however, consider it very unlikely a person would show up on this earth with only one option to live their destiny. Regardless of all that I must now direct us back to the topic I began with… (apologies for the side trip)

What Does it Mean to be Called to Magic?

It’s not like I can tell you I have the absolute answer to any of this.

According to the lore of the ages, conversations I have had with other initiates, and my own personal experiences, being called to magic is being invited, even led, to the magical path by experiences, intuition, another person, or a spiritual entity.

In my case there were many experiences culminating in my interaction with a spirit I believe to part of the goddess archetype and who is still with me today. It happens like this for many, but it – initiation by invitation – happens in other ways as well.

To Want or Know

You might have a deep desire to experience magic, and this can drive experiences such as the calling. Alternatively you may have little or no interest in magic but still be unable to escape the nagging feeling or incessant pull towards the gateway to the path of magic.

I can’t tell someone what they should do here. I lean towards saying just follow the calling and get in here, we need you. I have no way of knowing if that is the right path for anyone other than myself so I refrain from such encouragement.

Only you can decide to heed the call or choose otherwise.

Called Why?

Another open question we can’t definitely answer.

Maybe a person is called for their personal growth, or perhaps to gain power they can use to help others, someone specific even. Someone could be called to learn simply because they have the right makeup to do so.

It may not even be about the ones called. Perhaps the Goddess Arcana or Magica calls people for her own reasons and purposes.

What to Expect?

What can I offer in terms of what you should expect if you answer the call? I can tell you the truth from my perspective and experiences.

You will not be the same as you were before you answered the call ever again.

Your understanding of reality will expand a great deal and this will be an ongoing process.

You will mingle with inhabitants of the unseen worlds; maybe a little or maybe a lot, whether or not you are aware of their presence. They will come; the good, bad, ugly, pretty and indifferent will be among them.

You may be able to do things beyond your wildest dreams.

You may regret it and there may be no going back.

It is possible you will know levels of sadness you never thought possible.

You could also experience great fear, or the lack of fear.

Things I used to fear have little or even no impact on me now. I do not fear my own death beyond an instinctive impulse to run.

I do fear the loss of loved ones and the one thing I truly fear, the only thing I am really scared of is being in this world without them, alone. I don’t remember ever thinking of that before I walked the path (maybe just a coincidence).

Instead of a conundrum where you have two options and a hard time choosing, I decided to go with a paradox where both options are right and you should figure out to employ them both, despite the fact they seem mutually exclusive.

If you’re going to be around magic, get used to paradox.

The issue is this:

  1. Hesitation is generally counterproductive with this thing. You should be decisive and act.
  2. It’s best to be sure before you plunge into a thing that is difficult or impossible to back out of.

Yep. I don’t recommend you dilly dally and lose momentum or miss out.

Roger that. I encourage you to know for sure you want this before you step throughtrhe gate.

So there you have a moderately useful discussion of the calling. Hope it adds some kind of value.
